Winstone Aggregates acquires The Urban Quarry to extend its circular + recycling solutions offering

The acquisition of The Urban Quarry marks a major milestone of Winstone Aggregates fast track plan to extend its circular & recycling solutions for our customers.

The Urban Quarry, located in Onehunga and Henderson Auckland, provides a dual service of aggregate supply for city-based construction sites while also collecting construction and demolition waste.

“Within the construction industry in New Zealand there is an opportunity to provide more sustainable solutions through increased focused on the circular life cycle of concrete. While there is a degree of recycling undertaken in the industry for construction and demolition waste the reality is that there is still a large proportion that could be diverted from landfill and upcycled back into the construction industry. The trick is capturing sufficient waste quantities at a central point to enable recycling on an efficient scale,” says Amanda Croft, GM Winstone Aggregates.

“The Urban Quarry model achieves this, and its acquisition provides a key foundational step in our move to drive a more long-term sustainable position for our industry through recycling and reusing waste concrete.

“With traditional quarries operating further away from urban areas, transportation of concrete waste is an expensive and unsustainable option. Operations such as The Urban Quarry, which cater specifically for the needs of urban development, are increasingly becoming an integral part of the circular waste solution for growing cities.

“We believe recycling concrete at scale is possible and will deliver a viable waste minimisation option for the construction industry. Through the combination of Winstone Aggregates expertise and the strong foothold The Urban Quarry already has in the Auckland market we intend to enhance our understanding of the logistics and economics of the urban quarry model to scale the business further.”

The team at The Urban Quarry has built a great business which gives Winstone Aggregate a solid go-forward position for future growth and we are excited to welcome them. Winstone Aggregates is looking forward to being part of its future by bringing in expertise and investment that will allow us to expand and scale the business further.
