Ōtaika Quarry has once again proven that great safety is built through everyday actions, taking home the prestigious Winstone Aggregates Safety Award at the 2026 QuarryNZ Conference.
Presented at the annual QuarryNZ Conference, held in Invercargill in late July, the Winstone Aggregates Safety Award recognises quarry operations that have delivered meaningful improvements in health and safety through innovation, engagement and measurable change.
The recognition is a proud achievement for the Northland team and reflects the commitment every person at Ōtaika Quarry makes to keeping themselves, their teammates and visitors safe every day.
Rather than rewarding compliance alone, the award celebrates sites that have embedded safety into the way they think, plan and operate.
For the Ōtaika team, it reflects a sustained focus on creating a culture where safety is owned by everyone. Through strong workforce engagement, proactive risk management and practical operational controls, the team has demonstrated that safety is at the heart of everything they do.
"This award is a reflection of the conversations, behaviours and decisions our team makes every day. Safety isn't driven by one person or one initiative. It's built through everyone taking ownership, looking out for each other and having the confidence to speak up when something doesn't look right,” say Winstone Aggregates Health and Safety Manager Anya Hardy.
“I'm incredibly proud of the culture the Ōtaika team has created and this recognition belongs to every person on site."
Thornton Williams, Chief Executive Heavy Building Materials, said the award recognises the team's unwavering commitment to looking after one another.

This latest achievement adds to a long history of safety excellence at Ōtaika Quarry, which has previously won the Winstone Aggregates Safety Award in 2024, 2005, 2000 and 1994.
The celebrations didn't stop there. The QuarryNZ Conference also recognised several members of the wider Ōtaika team for their individual contributions to the industry.
