Firth opens new concrete plant in Auckland

Firth’s new concrete plant is about to start production – ready to enable Auckland’s growing infrastructure needs.

The state-of-the-art plant can produce over 200 cubic metres of concrete per hour with two drive-through production lanes. That’s enough concrete to produce around 40 driveways, every hour. This will allow Auckland to keep pace with the demand for housing, infrastructure, and commercial development.

The plant was blessed by Te Ākitai Waiohua Kaumatua David Wilson this morning, ready to ramp up production to full capacity from 2nd February.

“Having a cutting-edge facility like this located in Penrose, right on the Southern motorway, will enable us to efficiently serve the needs of major construction and infrastructure projects. We’re seeing a big demand for concrete in Auckland as the economy recovers. We’re now well-placed to fill that demand,” says Cameron Lee, General Manager of Fletcher Building’s Firth Industries.

The plant isn’t just designed with volume in mind; it also has a strong focus on reducing Firth’s impact on the environment. The plant will be the central supply for Auckland, producing Firth EcoMix®, an innovative low-carbon concrete that reduces embodied carbon without compromising strength or performance. This allows builders and developers to meet their sustainability targets. It also has increased capacity for supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) and recycled concrete aggregates, and a fully integrated, automated concrete reclaiming and wastewater system which enables 100% reuse of wastewater. This means high-volume production with even lower carbon and reduced waste, driving growth in a circular economy.

“Demand for concrete is surging, and now we’re ready to deliver, at scale and sustainably” says Cameron Lee.
