Fletcher Building to Hold Canterbury Careers Fair

As the Canterbury rebuild picks up pace, Fletcher Building is looking for passionate, dedicated jobseekers to join its team. To showcase the range of job opportunities across its businesses, the company is holding the Fletcher Building Careers Fair, at the Westpac Business and Community Hub in Christchurch on Saturday, June 9.

The careers fair will give prospective jobseekers the opportunity to meet face-to-face with people from eleven Fletcher Building businesses, all of which are playing major roles in the rebuild of Canterbury and looking to hire staff.

Fletcher Building currently has approximately 70 vacancies in the Canterbury region across its businesses. On top of these vacancies, it expects its Canterbury businesses will need to hire an additional 200 people over the coming year.

Kate Daly, Fletcher Building Group general manager, human resources, said with the pace of construction work increasing in and around Christchurch, employment opportunities with Fletcher Building were growing.

“Right now our businesses are looking to employ people right across the board – from truck drivers to sales coordinators, forklift operators to structural engineers.

“By holding a careers fair in Christchurch we’re ensuring locals have the best opportunity to get first-hand information and are able to apply for the jobs on offer. Employing locals is great for the community and our businesses also benefit from working with people who have a connection with the region,” Mrs Daly said.

Canterbury Employers’ Chamber of Commerce chief executive Peter Townsend applauded the initiative, saying the resources required in Christchurch were unprecedented.

“It makes good sense to harness local talent and this fair will provide an excellent opportunity to do just that. I’d encourage anybody seeking an active role in the reconstruction of our city to attend,” he said.

The eleven businesses taking part in the fair include Tasman Insulation (Pink® Batts®), Dimond (roofing) and Fletcher EQR.

Fletcher EQR currently employs 525 people and has inducted more than 13,000 contractors to assist with the rebuild of Canterbury.

“We will continue to need qualified tradesmen but also have a number of technical and administration roles which we need to fill. The careers fair will help us attract the people we’re looking for,” said David Peterson, general manager, Fletcher EQR.

As well as information on current vacancies, staff at the fair will also be able to provide an idea of future opportunities as the rebuild progresses.

People will be able to register their details with Fletcher Building on the day in case a position which matches their skills comes up in the future.

“There will undoubtedly be strong demand for workers over the next few years at least, so it only makes sense to plan ahead,” Kate Daly said.

In early May Fletcher Aluminium commenced operating its new $5 million, 4000-square-metre window and door finishing facility in Wigram, which will employ 70 people when it reaches full capacity. The pre-fabrication side of the factory is running now, with 15 employees already on-site. The site will be officially opened in July.
