Successful Galvanised Wire Action Against Dumping

Fletcher Building Limited advises that one of its business units, Pacific Wire, has been successful in its claim of galvanised steel wire dumping imported from Malaysia causing material injury to New Zealand industry.

The finding in Pacific Wire's favour by the Trade Remedies Group of the Ministry of Economic Development follows examination of an application made by Pacific Wire in September 2003.

Another Fletcher Building business unit Pacific Steel also succeeded in its complaint in February 2004 against imports of dumped reinforcing bar from Thailand. That work followed a complaint lodged by Pacific Steel in May 2003, and resulted in a substantial anti-dumping duty on rebar from Thailand.

Actions against Unfair Trade are enabled by the New Zealand Dumping and Countervailing Duties Act 1988 which mirrors New Zealand's obligations to the international community and the World Trade Organisation.  While subject to review, antidumping measures have a five year term.

The Government has not yet made a decision on the remedy for this dumping action but they can include the imposition of an anti dumping duty or the setting of an acceptable import price on Malaysian galvanised wire imports.

Pacific Wire employs 101 people and is New Zealand's only producer of galvanized wire having operated from its Otahuhu, Auckland site since 1966.
