Our vision
Fletcher Building's injury rate reduction
Company-wide, we recognise the challenges we face going forward. Since 2006, we have made significant progress, with our injury rates halving in three years, but challenges remain.
In safety-critical areas, we are moving towards more consistent standards across the group. The Health and Safety Council has adopted a list of safety critical issues for which “Fatal Risk Guidelines” have been developed. These guidelines continue to be built on, to integrate new information and learnings.
Fletcher Building also recognises the importance of leadership to support change to culture and behaviours. In 2007, we introduced our inaugural Safety Awards. This annual competition is designed to recognise high levels of commitment and reward effective safety initiatives.
In 2008, we initiated Pulse08, a company-wide health and safety conference for 150 senior managers, facilitated by Executives.

The Fletcher Building Health & Safety Excellence Awards were introduced in 2007 to recognise outstanding health and safety initiatives and successes. We believe that one of the best ways to raise health and safety standards is to recognise and reward those who lead the field and encourage others to follow their example. The annual awards have been strengthened each year, and in 2009 included four categories and international participation with the Formica Group coming on board. The winners are announced at a ceremony evening in celebration of their achievements, and the information about all finalists is published afterwards to communicate and celebrate safety successes. By positively reinforcing safety in the workplace, the Awards can help people to see safety as something to be achieved, rather than just avoiding incidents. 2009 WinnersWinstone Aggregates: Business Unit Health & Safety Performance Excellence Award |

The Pulse08 health and safety conference brought together 160 Fletcher Building senior managers from business units around the world. The name of ‘Pulse08’ was chosen to communicate that health and safety is the lifeblood of the business, and a responsibility of everyone, not just health and safety specialists. The conference was designed to encourage senior managers to take ownership of health and safety performance. Fletcher Building CEO, Jonathan Ling, and each divisional chief executive took ownership of a section of the conference to indicate the seriousness of Fletcher Building’s commitment to our Zero Harm vision. |
